Last Day of ABI & More Gold Class!
Friday June 2nd – Our final day of the ABI week. We began with more anatomy yes, more! We then watched some more videos of client training as well as a BBC documentary on the brain. The documentary was really interesting, it’s focus was on perception and cognition. I found one part particularly interesting so bear with me. The show was explaining how vision can be unreliable as the brain is not always interpreting exactly what the eyes are seeing. The researchers did the following experiment to investigate this theory; Participants in an experiment came into a reception area to sign in and fill out a consent form. They were greeted by a young man in his twenties standing behind a waist high counter. He has brown hair and is wearing a green shirt. The person fills out the consent form and hands it to him. He ducks behind the counter to file it and while he is behind the counter a second man stands up in his place. This man is about the same age, same color hair, but other than that does not look much like the first man. He is also wearing a different color shirt. He hands the person their receipt and directs them to the door leading to “the experiment”. Here’s the kicker; 75% of the people did NOT notice the switch! The brain was attending to other details and “filled in the blanks” or discrepancies to be what it expected to see. Pretty wild!
In the afternoon two ABI clients came in and shared their experiences with us. It’s always interesting to have the clients give us their perspective and today was no exception. It was a good way to end the week.
Then it was time for Gold Class Theatre! Pete and Leslie got a babysitter (Pete’s parents) and we all went to see The Davinci Code in style. This was Sue’s first experience at gold class and she loved it too.
